St Albans

The City of St Albans is regarded as the principal north-of-London commuter town.  Ideally positioned just a 20 minute train ride from the capital, the history of St Albans dates back to the Roman times.  Open spaces, large parks, good shopping and eating, varied entertainment and great connections, offer a quieter lifestyle for the busy commuter, than London.

With character properties in the narrow historic streets of the old section, many tree lined avenues with established 18th and early 19th century properties, St Albans has also undergone the expansion and development many towns in the South East have over the last 30 years or so.  Many new homes and city centre apartments have also been built over the last 5 years.

St Albans lies between Harpenden, Watford and Hatfield, with the smaller pretty villages of Redbourn, Wheathampstead and London Colney all within a few miles.  The magnificent Abbey Church dominates the skyline on the main approaches and sits at the top of the famous Verulamium Park.

The small, quiet but thriving city offers something for everyone, including the ancient Roman ruins at Verulamium, museums, open spaces, and a lake in 100 acres of tranquil parkland.  The centre's historic streets are packed with specialist shops, a twice weekly market, cafes, bars, winebars and many restaurants that cater for all tastes.  Larger and more vibrant than Harpenden 6 miles to the North, St Albans has a special 'feel' to its centre that mixes the traditional areas with modern shopping parades.

There are a variety of excellent state funded schools, and the famous independent St Albans School for Boys and St Albans High School for Girls.  The University of Hertfordshire's Business School and Faculty of Law is based here, as is the highly regarded Oaklands College. Sports enthusiasts are well catered for with golf, rugby, football and a couple of modern gyms and there is a lively theatre in the centre of the City.

The Thameslink runs directly into London 4 times an hour, and once the King's Cross work is complete, the Eurostar will be even more accessible.  With the M1 and M25 very close, the A1(M) nearby, Luton Aiport 20 minutes away and Heathrow within 25 miles, St Albans is perfectly positioned for access to other parts of the country and Europe.
