Villages

There are many villages within a 10 minute drive of Harpenden and St Albans. All have their own unique style and attractions, while benefitting from their proximity to all the amenities and transport links that serve these two so well. Lying in the rolling Hertfordshire countryside, they appeal to those that want a slightly quieter pace of life with a little more space at their doorstep.

Positioned to the north of Hertfordshire, the many villages around Harpenden and St Albans encompass the requirements of South East England today.

Redbourn and Wheathampstead are the largest two. Both offer green open spaces, woods to explore, rivers to walk along and picnic by, small independent shops, good restaurants and traditional pubs. They have retained there unspoilt, traditional village feel, but have the ubiquitous general store. Away from the main roads they contain many fine buildings, churches and places of interest, some steeped in Roman or Saxon history. Both have good junior schools which can feed into the very good secondary schools in Harpenden and St Albans.

The Herts Show Ground is just outside Redbourn, and a minute from the M1. Hosting many events throughout the year, and is one of the access/travel points for the London Olympics in 2011. There are also many golf clubs, sports clubs and recreational activity centres for all ages in the surrounding area.

Of the smaller villages or hamlets, Flamstead is 3 miles from Redbourn, with Markyate a couple of miles further north along the old A5 (Watling Street). On the other side of Harpenden and to the North sit some beautiful villages and hamlets with some very desirable properties Gustard Wood, Blackmore End and Makerey End.

Kimpton is bigger than these and serves them well, the highlight being their renowned May Day Festival that seems to grow every year, while retaining the charm and character of a traditional English summer festival.

With great road and rail links for the North South, East and West, Luton Airport on their doorstep and Stanstead within an hour, the surrounding villages of Harpenden and St Albans are ideally situated for modern living within a village spirit and community.
